Chapter 9

I walked at a slow, steady pace as I headed back from my date with Vemi, because I wanted to just enjoy the wonderfully peaceful sights and sounds of Altrumnia at night. This was one of the rare times I was able to see the sun go down on my new home, since normally I’d come back to the guild so tired and worn out that I’d crash before it even got dark. The few times I’d seen Altrumnia in the dark were just like tonight, just as peaceful and serene.

The soft glow of raised lamps radiated across the landscape and turned it into a stage of shadow and light. The entire village smelled of fresh flowers mixed with just the slightest undertone of pipe and chimney smoke, and there was a brisk breeze that blew against my face as I walked. Though it was later in the evening, there were still plenty of villagers out and about, each one of whom gave me a warm smile as they passed by with a silent greeting. I took my sweet time getting back to the guild, but when I finally did, I headed straight up to the barracks, found an empty top bunk, and then crashed.

For the first time since I’d been in Dalmos, I woke up of my own accord. I didn’t have anywhere to be, and I assumed that Symos hadn’t been able to find me and give me a wake-up call since we didn’t return to the guild together. Instead, my eyes fluttered open of their own accord, and I sat up and stretched as I let out a yawn, then I smacked my lips as I looked for any indicator of the time. I could hear other guild members chattering as they got ready for the day as well as the soft chirping of birds outside one of the windows. Still half asleep, I tossed my legs over the side of the bed and then gently slid off, where I landed on the wood floor with a soft thud.

I rubbed my eyes as I picked my backpack up off the second bunk, then I carried it with me as I went to the shower. Once I was nice and clean, I changed back into my more comfortable Earth pants and then went back into the barracks to look for Symos. I didn’t see the tall, horned figure anywhere in the barracks, so I headed for the common room instead.

As I walked along the balcony, I looked down and saw Symos sitting across from the elf, Tolgof, as well as another human male and female. The quartet seemed lost in conversation, and I noticed that they each had a pastry in one hand and a drink in the other, though Tolgof’s horned cup was triple the size of anybody else’s. The elf already had a strange, incoherent look on his face and uncoordinated motions, and I was shocked to see somebody so drunk this early in the morning.
